Balloon-assisted enteroscopy(BAE) was introduced in the early 21st century and has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of small bowel diseases.

Compared with video capsule endoscopy---the other principal tool for small bowel evaluation---BAE offers direct visualization, real-time tissue sampling, precise lesion localization, and definitive endoscopic therapy in a single session. As BAE has become an essential procedure in daily clinical practice, there is an increasing need for a textbook on when and how to perform it and what technical factors should be considered.
